Fruits of our Labour

Dunedin Book Launch and Presentation 19 March 2018

This 2-volume publication, Fruits of our Labour, was launched in Dunedin on 19 March 2018 by Mr Peter Chin, ex-Chair of the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust and ex-Mayor of Dunedin.

The publication was commissioned by the Poll Tax Trust as part of a series of publications to document our history. Three of the book’s authors, Ruth Lam, Helen Wong, and Carolyn King were at the launch to talk about their involvement with the book. Mr Reg Kan of Wing On and Co was the guest speaker. Wing On, of course, was the last fruit shop on George Street. The current Mayor of Dunedin, Dave Cull, welcomed over 120 people to the book launch and highlighted the importance of the Chinese to the Dunedin community. Malcolm Wong, as the current Trustee of the Poll Tax Trust also spoke and explained the role of the Trust in preserving Chinese history in New Zealand. Special thanks to Carolyn King who organised the book launch as well as put together a slideshow and photographs for display at the book launch. It was a true trip down memory lane for many who attended. If you would like to purchase copies of the book, please email Carolyn King at kingcarolynz@gmail.com
