The Wuhan Acrobatic and Cultural Troupe performed a one-off concert at The Regent Theatre in Dunedin on the 19th January 2017. The evening was really well supported and ticket sales were very pleasing. The show was a joint effort with New Zealand Chinese Association, Otago & Southland Branch Inc, The Dunedin Chinese Garden Trust, and the Dunedin Chinese Scholar and Student Association underwriting the show, and the generous support of the Wuhan Municipal Government, the Chinese Consul General, the Honourable Jin Zhijian, and our sponsors, and volunteers.

The Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe was formed in 1953 with a total of 72 members. the troupe now numbers over 200 members ranging in age from 7 to 45 and is divided into 3 groups, each group training around 7 hours a day. For this performance, we were treated to a rare performance with a cast of 34 who delighted the audience with a mixture of acrobatics, courtesy of the Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe, along with dancing, and music courtesy of the Wuhan Singing and Dancing Theatre.

The show was visually stunning and showcased 12 acts with a mixture of dance, music, and acrobatics. Memorable is an apt description and the show was well worth the price of entry. All the acrobatic acts showcased the skills of the performers with the dancers who kept plates spinning on the end of long sticks, the hat jugglers, and the contortionists being particularly notable.

The dance acts were visually stunning and the quality of the singers and musicians were very impressive.

Notable members of the cast include Mr Dong Yanfeng, a tenor, Ms Wan Jing, a soprano, Mr Li Fangming, musician, and dancers Song Lele, Zhang Bohan, Hu Yingying, and Li Yating. The acrobats rounded out a very special show, one that is unlikely to be seen in Dunedin for quite I while.
